Horn Of Africa Once Again Polio-Free, UNICEF And Polio Partners Announce
Fri, 30 Jul 2010 11:00:00 +0100 | Health News from Medical News Today
The Horn of Africa is again polio-free, with Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda having reported no wild poliovirus cases for more than a year. Today marks a step towards the achievement of a major objective of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative's new strategy - stopping polio in Africa. The outbreak began in 2008, following the reappearance of wild poliovirus type 1 in the border area of southern Sudan and Ethiopia, and spread in early 2009 to the northern Sudanese city of Port Sudan, and to Kenya and Uganda... Morphometric and molecular differentiation of Phlebotomus (Phlebotomus) sandflies
Tue, 27 Jul 2010 23:00:00 +0100 | Medical and Veterinary Entomology
The closely related sandfly species of the subgenus Phlebotomus namely, Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli, 1786), Phlebotomus duboscqi Neveu-Lemair, 1906 and Phlebotomus bergeroti Parrot, 1934 (Diptera: Psychodidae), are major vectors of Leishmania major (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae), the causative agent of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Old World. Although allopatric in most of their distribution, the three species exist sympatrically in many places in central and eastern Sudan. Males of the three species can be distinguished using morphological characters; however, females are much harder to identify, thus complicating epidemiological studies. We carried out a morphometric and a molecular study to determine reliable morphological features and develop a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) as...

Southern Sudan: Ringing the alarm bell and saving children’s lives
Fri, 23 Jul 2010 19:39:00 +0100 | MSF News
“It’s red,” my colleague calls out to me, so I make another tally mark on our data sheet where ‘red’ results are increasingly becoming the norm. We walk to the next house and find another red, and then another some moments later. After assessing over 300 children, we decide to take a break away from the southern Sudanese heat – it is 46 C and only 11a.m. For those children who have a mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) scoring of red, meaning that they are severely malnourished, there is a significantly increased risk of dying. MUAC measurements are a quick and simple process whereby a measuring band is placed around the upper arm. A reading is then made and the measurement indicates the severity of their nutritional status. We continue throughout the day, walking from house...

Southern Sudan: MSF expands activities as nutritional situation worsens
Fri, 23 Jul 2010 19:05:00 +0100 | MSF News
Moses Chol, emergency coordinator for MSF in southern Sudan, explains how MSF is expanding activities so that more nutritional aid will reach the regions where people desperately need it. What is the nutritional situation in southern Sudan today? The situation is extremely worrying, especially in the Upper Nile region. More than 800 children are being treated in MSF’s feeding centres in Unity State alone. The annual hunger gap is not entirely to blame for this, as there was a 200 per cent increase in the number of children treated compared to the same period last year. Why do you think the situation is so bad this year? There is a combination of factors, but the main one is the scarcity of food. Basically, we are six or eight weeks away from the harvest and there is very little foo...

Sudan: Lack of HIV Prevention Methods a Major Concern - Living With ---- # 440

The good news from the International ---- Conference in Vienna that a microbicide gel tested in South Africa for the prevention of HIV infection is an ironically painful reminder that there is an urgent need for effective preventative measures to reduce new HIV infections.
